Spalted Burl Vase

$380.00

Made in Aotearoa/New Zealand.

Although the exact species of tree is unknown (as this was salvaged wood), this piece includes rare variations. The highly-prized spalting is created when fungi compete to colonise the wood, drawing out their battle lines with these black marks. It is a beginning process of decay, but can be captured and stopped at the right moment before the wood becomes punky or rotten. There is also a small burl on the outer edge of the wood which I have endeavoured to keep intact, by making the vase wider at the top. There are also cracks and inactive insect holes- these are not defects, but simply part of the nature of working with wood.

Please note- this vase is suitable for dried flowers only.

Dimensions: 185mm diameter x 73mm high
