About
After searching for a creative outlet following the birth of my son, I discovered wood-turning and was hooked from day one. The smell of the different timbers, the way the shavings peel off a sharp tool, and the ability to transform a piece destined for the wood pile, became completely and utterly addictive.
I love to create simple, beautiful, and functional pieces that emphasise the natural beauty and warmth of wood, and I often celebrate the imperfections that I discover. Knots, burls, cracks, and nail holes are not seen as defects, but marks of life. Holes from where someone once nailed a floorboard in a villa, the tracks of insects as they burrowed to make a home, or quite simply the grain of a tree as it twisted and stretched towards the sun- these all tell a story. For this reason, I prefer to use wood that has been salvaged or reclaimed, over cultivated timber. This is what makes each piece unique and individual, and delineates the hand-crafted from the mass-produced.
Because my craft is about honouring wood and nature, I only use natural finishes (tung oil, beeswax, or mānuka finishing wax), which are safe for your home and skin. Similarly, I want the wood to feel like wood so all my works have a soft matte finish- they are not polished to a high shine, nor made to feel and look like plastic.
I am always experimenting and evolving, and finding new techniques and shapes I want to explore.
